ALLEN, William "Bill" E. - At his residence on Saturday August 1, 2015 just a few weeks shy of his 90th birthday. Beloved husband of Violet "Vi" Adams with whom he shared an enduring love story for almost two dozen years. Adored father of Marilyn (Jon Thornton) of Peterborough, Doug (Ellen) of Vancouver, Louise (Jeff Sinclair) of Mississauga, and Dwight his adopted son who predeceased him. Loved and proud grandfather of Brooke (Kris Rea), Christine, and Jessica (Tanya Bates) Thornton; Nicole, Lindsey and Sean Allen; Jocelyn and Mark Sinclair and bemused great-grandfather of Elliot Rea. He is also survived by his children's mother, Catherine Allen. Predeceased by his parents John and Mary Allen and siblings Robert, Thomas, Ruth Harrison, Ross, and Elizabeth Hamilton. Bill was a doting husband, generous father, successful businessman (founded Allen Lumber in 1963), community fund-raiser, strongly opinionated politician, world traveler, Conservative bag-man, instigator and hilarious raconteur. Dad could be crusty and stubborn or charming by turn and was endlessly proud of his entire family. A voracious reader, always astute, and blessed with a memory like a steel trap to the very end, he entertained and shared his lifetime of knowledge with intelligence and humour. Bill served on Woodstock City Council (Mayor 1970-72; Alderman 1969-70) as well as numerous boards and committees. He provided countless anonymous donations and was an ardent supporter of education. He had a broad and positive outlook on life, an unshakable sense of right and wrong, and believed strongly in civic duty. He'll be forever missed. His family wish to thank the staff at Park Place for Dad's attentive care and those at People Care Tavistock who care for his darling Vi. A private family service will be held. Cremation has taken place. If desired, memorial contributions to the Salvation Army would be appreciated and may be arranged through the Online condolences at www.brockandvisser.com
