ENGARDT, Michael "Mike" - of Kitchener passed away peacefully on Saturday March 31, 2012 in his 102nd year. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Irmgart and his children, Theresa Hutter, Steve Engardt and his wife Ann, Helmut Gimbel, Karl Gimbel and Heidi Bender. His grandchildren include Fred Hutter, Victor Hutter and his wife Tricia, Marilyn Watson (nee Hutter) and her husband Andy, Tim, Jim and Colleen Engardt. Great grandchildren include Michael, Christine and Mandy Hutter, Geoffery and Steven Hutter, Curtis and Alexandra Watson, Ryan, Emily Bender and the newest addition to his growing family is great-great granddaughter Emily Hutter. Also survived by his cousin Joe Weis and his wife Ada. Predeceased by his first wife Magdelena Engardt and two siblings, Adam and Andrew Engardt. Michael was born in Csatalja, Hungary in 1910. He opened a variety store in his 20's but with the onset of World War II, he volunteered as a medic in the Hungarian army. He was taken prisoner and held in a Russian concentration camp for five years, during WWII. He rejoined his family in Canada after the war, thanks to the many efforts of the Canadian Red Cross. He was the proud owner of Mike's Quality Meats and Delicatessen in Woodstock, Ontario for over 40 years. He retired in 1994 and spent every winter at his cherished second home in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Friends may call at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Ave., Woodstock (519-539-0004) on Wednesday April 4, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, where the funeral service will be held in the chapel on Thursday at 11:00 am. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions to Holy Trinity Catholic Parish Building Fund or Sunnyside Home, Kitchener would be appreciated.
