MATHESON, Melvin Alexander passed away at the Woodstock Hospital on Tuesday morning, September 6, 2022.  Mel was in his 88th year.  Born on the home farm on the 7th line in Embro, Mel was the oldest son of Alec and Irene (Fraser) Matheson.  As big brother, he was the mischievous and spirited role model for his 5 siblings, Doug (pre) and Jackie Matheson, Tom Matheson, Connie (Matheson) and John Lauder, Glen and Sharon Matheson and Jim and Gerda Matheson. Sixty-five years ago, he stepped out of the doors of Charlie Beagley’s Pool Hall and met the love of his life, Beverley Anne Spearin and a year later they were married at the St Marys Presbyterian Church.  Mel was a devoted, caring and fun-loving father to Tim Matheson and his partner Terri of Lion's Head and Jennifer Moodie and her husband Wayne of Embro. He also brought joy, humour and love to his 6 beloved grandchildren, Rachel, Shannon and Shelby Jo Moodie and Adam, Scott & Carly, and Ryan Matheson. This year, Uncle Mel attended his 80th Embro Highland Games where the entire clan of nieces and nephews gathered and where Mel first held his new Great Grandson, Foster Alexander, son of Scott and Carly, who was only 14 days old!  During Mel’s years of community involvement as an Optimist, Caledonian, Tug of War anchorman and all around great guy, he built special relationships with everyone who had the pleasure to know him! He continued sharing his smile, laugh and sense of humour with many more friends when he moved North above the checkerboard as the “foreman” at Camp Celtic and head cook and bottle washer at Tamarac Island Inn. Mel and Bev put the "Happy" in Happy Hour during the winters down south at Sanlan Ranch in Florida! Mel will be fondly remembered by anyone whose life he touched.
There will be a Celebration of Mel’s life at the Westover Inn, 300 Thomas Street, St Marys Ontario, on Saturday October 15th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. with memories shared at 3:00 p.m
