Mavis (Hutchins) Armstrong

October 30, 1928 — November 12, 2023

Thelma Mavis Armstrong “Mavis”, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2023, at her home in Woodstock at the age of 95.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Don, in 2011. Mavis was the proud mother of Laura Earle of Woodstock, Christopher Armstrong (Roxanne) of Edmonton, AB, and Louise Weiss (Bruce) of New Dundee. She was a cherished Grandma to Jesse Earle, Arthur Armstrong, Tyler Weiss (Riley), and Lexi Kubessek (Jon). Mavis also had the joy of being a Great-Grandma to Lizzie Earle, Sofia Armstrong, Grayson Weiss, Heidi Weiss, and Evelynn Armstrong.

She is survived by her sisters Joyce Keith (late Marvin), Elaine Hatt (late Bob), Caroline Armstrong (Howard), and her brother Bruce Hutchins (late Peggy). Mavis was also a dear sister-in-law to Bill Armstrong (Margaret). She was predeceased by her parents Beecher and Grace Hutchins, brothers Max Hutchins (RoseMarie) and Jim Hutchins (Elsie), and sisters-in-law Betty Embury (Lloyd) and Joyce Bailey (Dave).

Mavis dedicated her professional life to education, teaching Math, English, and Library for many years at local schools, DM Sutherland, and Southside. Her intelligence and passion for learning were evident in her teaching, inspiring countless students throughout her career.  Mavis was also a self-published author, her love for books extending beyond the classroom into her personal life.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mavis had a zest for life. She was an avid world traveler, her adventurous spirit taking her  to all corners of the globe. Mavis also had a unique hobby of collecting elephants, a testament to her eclectic interests and curious nature.  A long-time member of St. David’s United Church,  Mavis was a woman of deep faith, which guided her throughout her life.

Friends will be received at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov 16 from 2-4 and 6-8pm.  Memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday, Nov 17th at 11am with Rev. Jeff Smith officiating.  Interment at Old Log Church Cemetery.  For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of one’s choice.
