SCHERMERHORN, John Francis - 69 years of age passed away on Sunday August 5, 2012 peacefully while holding hands with Mary (nee McLeod) his wife of 41 years. Loving father of Allen and Paul of Woodstock. Brother-in-law to Darwin Beckham (Marion), Sharon Schermerhorn (Douglas) and sister Jean White and husband Murray all of Woodstock, Bob and Ena McLeod of Curries, Len and Judi McLeod of Oakville and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents George and Verna Schermerhorn and son-in-law to the late Douglas and Mary McLeod. John was a charter member of the East Oxford-Oxford Centre Optimist Club and was a life member of Dundas St. United Church. At the age of 15 he started working at Pruss Alignment Service in Woodstock where he received his apprenticeship. In 1977 he followed in his father's footsteps and started John Schermerhorn Home Builder. In 1989 he formed his own company John Schermerhorn Alignment and Collision Services. Repairing cars was his passion and his present 1957 Chevy Belair has travelled 47 states in the United States and several eastern provinces in Canada. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received by the family for a time of reception at Dundas St. United Church on Wednesday August 8, 2012 from 5 - 6:30 pm. A procession of classic cars (all are welcome) will follow to North Embro Cemetery and the Rev. Bonnie Pilkey will officiate an interment service. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Dundas St. United Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated and may be arranged through the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, Woodstock, 519-539-0004.
