BARNES, Helen Marie- Passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 in her 92nd year, family by her side. Mom died on International Women's Day, significant because she was born three years before women were recognized as persons by law. Beloved wife of the late Robert Barnes (2004). Loved mother of Leslie Anne and Anthony Sheldon, Woodstock; Louis and Bertha (2017) Barnes, Port Rowan; Linda and Peter Miller, Petrolia; Lyndon and Karen Barnes, Dorchester. Cherished Gram of Sarah McDevitt, London, David and Patricia Sheldon, Stratford; Richard and Maria Scarfo Barnes, St. Catharines; Jeremy Barnes, Kitchener; Matthew Miller, Petrolia; Erin and Eric Hawryluk, Petrolia. Dear Great Gram (G.G.) of Liam and Rowan McDevitt; Thomas and Laura Sheldon; Allison and Tristyn Scarfo Barnes; Kennedy Miller, and Betty and Claire Hawryluk. Survived by her sister-in-law, Madeline Livingston (Ralph), Tonawanda NY. Also survived by nieces and a nephew. Predeceased by her parents, Richard and Anne Thomson; brother-in-law, Douglas and Judy Barnes and their son Michael. Her pugs Herb and Otis, were very special to her and Dad. And she loved her grand dogs. Mom was a member of Delhi United Church and St. David's United Church in Woodstock. Active in UCW at both churches, she was awarded a Life Membership. For many years, she volunteered at Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe. An avid gardener, her wildflowers and special plants continue to grow in our gardens. Mom was a craftsperson, creating unique needlework projects for everyone in her family. The chief organizer of numerous gatherings at the cottage at Long Point, Mom taught us the importance of family. Mom never left home without her earrings and lipstick. She lived a good life; her memory will linger on in our hearts. The family wishes to thank the Angels at The Maples in Tavistock who tirelessly and lovingly cared for our mother during her stay there, and on her final journey. We will not forget you. A private family gathering to celebrate a life well-lived will be held at a later date. Donations to the charity of your choice, in Mom's memory, are gratefully acknowledged by the family and can be made through the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Ave., Woodstock (519-539-0004).
