Gregory William Scheurman, March 29, 1930 - November 19, 2021
On Friday, November 19th, Gregory William Scheurman passed away at Caressant Care Nursing and Retirement Home, Woodstock in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of Doris Ilene Scheurman (nee Cooke) for almost 65 years. Loved father of Bill (Tilly) Scheurman, Michele (James) Maenpaa, Sheila (Don) Johnson, James (Ann) Scheurman and Katherine (Bob) Luyben. Proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren including Jessica Maenpaa (predeceased) and 9 great-grandchildren.
Greg farmed with his dad; building a new cattle barn and working the fields with horses, although he much preferred tractors. On July 20, 1957, Greg married Doris Ilene Cooke, and they took over the farm. Together they operated a successful dairy business and raised a family of five children. Sixteen grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren soon followed. In their retirement, Greg and Doris built toys and children’s furniture to the delight of their grandchildren. They continued to live on the farm where Greg grew up until his 89th year.
Gregory William Scheurman was the firstborn and only son of Leo Clement Scheurman and Mary Catherine Kloepher. Greg was born on March 29, 1930, in Youngstown, Alberta. Leo and Mary moved to Youngstown in 1929 to help run a family abattoir. A sister, Teresa (late Art Ogilvie), followed in 1933. The Depression made it very difficult for the family to get ahead. In the spring of 1933, Leo and Mary returned to Ontario. In 1934, they bought a farm on Lot 18, Concession 3, North Norwich Township in Oxford County. Three more sisters followed; Rosemary (late Carl Lackie) in 1937, the late Bernadette (Don Taylor) in 1938 and Rita in 1943.
