George Willis Woods, known to most as just George, took his final curtain call on July 27, 2023. Born on April 20, 1941, George spent 82 years on this earth, stubbornly refusing to do anything the easy way, and making everyone around him laugh while doing it.
George was a man of many hats, and not just because he was balding. He was a proud Navy man, who could spin a sea tale that would make Moby Dick seem like a goldfish. He was a fisherman, a hunter, and a canoeist. He could catch a fish with a piece of string, shoot a deer from a mile away, and paddle upstream in a hurricane. And he'd do it all with a grin on his face and a joke on his lips.
He was a father to his children, Lea Anne Woods and Mark Woods, and a grandfather to Jessica Phelps. And let's not forget her husband, Andy, who George always insisted on calling "that guy". He loved his family fiercely, even if he did have a strange way of showing it sometimes. Like the time he gave his daughter a taxidermy raccoon for her birthday, or when he taught his son how to make a canoe out of duct tape and a few twigs.
But most of all, George was a friend. He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back, then make a joke about how you probably didn't want it because it was covered in fish guts. He loved a good conversation, a hearty laugh, and a cold beer. And if you didn't agree with his opinions, well, that was just too bad. Because George was always right, even when he was wrong.
So, let's raise a glass to George Willis Woods. A stubborn, weird, funny, opinionated man who lived life on his own terms. He may be gone, but his spirit will live on in the laughter and memories he left behind. Here's to you, George. Thanks for the laughs.
