George Benson Gates

GATES, B. George – It is with great sadness that the family of George Benson Gates announces his sudden passing on May 26, 2020 at the age of 67 years old.   Beloved son of the late Douglas and Jessie (nee Baker) Gates.   Dear brother of Sharon Gates (Doug Parsons) and Anne Marie Gates-Porter(Ron Porter).  Cherished nephew of Nora Baker.   He will always be remembered by his cousins, extended family and friends.   When George was younger he loved to play hockey and baseball.   One of his favourite past times was to go hunting with his father.  As he got older, playing sports turned into watching them and after his father passed, hunting still was very much part of his life.   George truly loved staying active in other activities such as golfing, sailing, going to the theatre and concerts and being outdoors whenever he could.   Photography was another lifelong passion and his pictures were enjoyed by family and friends.   Although he worked in various capacities for General Motors he always fondly remembered his time working on locomotives partly due to his travels to such faraway places as India.  As a brother he enjoyed teasing and playing tricks on his sisters but was also always there to lend a helping hand.

Cremation has taken place.   Interment will take place in Lakeside Cemetery.  A celebration of George’s life will take place and be announced at a later date.  As expressions of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Association, Lakeside Cemetery or to any charity of your choice may be made through the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, Woodstock, (519) 539-0004 or at www.brockandvisser.com.
