FARMER- At University Hospital, London on Saturday, March 20, 2004, Capt. Edward (Ted) Farmer C.D. (Retired) age 80 passed away peacefully with his wife at his side. Son of the late Lt.-Col. Arthur Farmer OBE, MM and Ida Irene (Jones) Farmer. Loved husband of Marion (Treitz) Farmer and proud father of his son, David (Rosella) of Winnipeg, MB. Dear grandfather of Jennifer (Blake) Collett and David R. (Shona) of Winnipeg. Melanie (Mark) Smith of Ogden, Utah, Lisa (Shawn) Schwantes of Grand Forks, ND. "Big Poppa" to 10 great-grandchildren; Janna, Cassie, Taylor Dilts; Jessica, Christie Collett, Kole, Adrianna, Ashley, and twin girls Kennedy & Katelyn Farmer. Dear brother of Elaine (Farmer) Reczuch, Woodstock, Cliff of Kingston and the late Peggy Hooper. Ted will also be remembered by several nieces and nephews. Ted had an interesting military career-at age 9 he was a Bugler with the Oxford Rifles. He enlisted to the Royal Canadian Regiment as a "Boy Soldier' in 1939. With the rank of Sgt. (at the outbreak of WWII ) and being too young for overseas duty, he was a Drill Instructor at Wolsley Barracks, London. He then served with the Regiment in Canada, UK, Italy and Continental Europe. He retired in 1961 with the rank of Captain after 27 years of service. He continued his association with the Regiment as a life member of the RCR association. Following his retirement from the military, Ted and his family moved to Woodstock where he undertook a second career with CP Express for the next 25 years. During the 40 years that Ted resided in Woodstock he was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 55. He served in leadership positions as President, Zone Commander Zone B2, and numerous other positions. He especially enjoyed serving as Liaison Officer with the Woodstock Cadet Corps. As a result of his service with the Legion, Ted was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and a Life Membership. In 2003 Ted was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership of the Hong Kong Veterans Assn. When Ted was not involved with Legion or other community activities he was an avid curler traveling the local area to Bonspiels and other events. Friends may call at the R.D. Longworth Funeral Home 845 Devonshire Ave., Woodstock (539-0004) on Wednesday from 2:30-4:30 and 7-9pm where a Legion Service under auspices Royal Canadian Legion Branch #55 will be held in the chapel at 6:30pm. The family will receive friends at the Needham Funeral Home, 520 Dundas St., London on Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00pm where a Royal Canadian Regiment Association service will be held at 2:00 pm. Interment at the Woodland Cemetery London. Contributions to the Branch #55 Legion Cadet Corp. or the RCR Museum Campaign at Wolsley Barracks London.
