Douglas Vernon Kaufman, a respected figure in the agricultural community and beloved family man, passed away on February 17, 2025, in Woodstock, Ontario, at the age of 84. Born on April 19, 1940, in Woodstock, Doug dedicated his life to farming and agriculture, starting his journey at the age of 13 when he purchased his first livestock. He spent many years driving truck in his young adulthood, then moved on to his own farming enterprises, eventually establishing himself as an esteemed industry expert and advisor, with a particular focus on cattle.
Over his distinguished career, Doug became a well-respected member of the Oxford County Cattlemen's Association, where for many years he presided over the grill for the annual beef barbecue held in Tavistock every August. He was a visionary in the industry, co-founding the Ontario Cattle Feeders Association in 1998, which was pivotal in creating the renowned brand “Ontario Corn Fed Beef.” His entrepreneurial spirit shone through in his successful feed, seed, and fertilizer businesses. Additionally, Doug contributed his expertise as a member of the Board of Directors for Western General Insurance, where he also served a term as president.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Doug found joy and solace at Six Mile Lake, a place that held special memories from childhood visits to his aunts and uncles. He and his late wife Evelyn, who he was married to for 63 years enjoyed more than three decades at their cottage there.
Doug's personality was characterized by his reserved nature; he was a man of few words, yet those who sought his advice found in him a wealth of wisdom. He was generous with his time and resources, leaving a remarkable impact on those around him. One of his greatest pleasures came from his love of fishing. Whether at a remote camp in northern Quebec, off the dock of his cottage, or on a boat in Haida Gwaii, fishing was his favorite form of relaxation.
He is survived by his children, Brian (Brigitte), David (Ellen), and Leanne (Hugh Wilkins), along with his grandchildren Nathan (Erica), Stephanie, Kathryn (Alex), Jaclyn (Andy), Michelle (Nick), Matthew, Aurora, and Andrew, and great-grandchildren Emma and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his sisters Sharon (Gerry) Pilkington, Ruth Tucker, and Gretchen Hazlewood, as well as many nieces, nephews, and close cousins.
Doug was preceded in death by his beloved wife Evelyn (nee Black), who passed just months prior, and his parents Vernon and Edna Kaufman.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Caring Services for Seniors and Oxford Gardens for their unwavering support in Doug and Evelyn's later years, with special thanks to Teresa Hughes and Scott Gould, along with the compassionate team at Woodstock Hospital.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for March 1, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Brock & Visser Funeral Home Burial and Cremation Services Ltd., located in Woodstock, Ontario.
