Doris Marguerite (Hambly) Butcher

July 22, 1927 — April 30, 2022

BUTCHER, Doris Marguerite (nee Hambly)

Doris (Dorie as she was affectionately known to friends and family) passed away peacefully at Woodingford Lodge, Woodstock on Saturday, April 30, 2022, surrounded by her family.  She was the beloved wife of Carl for 68 years; and loving mother of Jennifer Butcher, and Jim (Karen) Butcher.

Doris is survived by her brothers William (June), David (Bev), Richard (Flo), her sister Jeannette McAlpine and her sister-in-law Sara Boyles.  She is predeceased by her brother Jack (Betty), and sister Irene Morrison (Jake).  Many nieces, nephews and dear friends will lovingly remember her.

Doris was born in Simcoe, and grew up on the family farm near Rockford, Ontario.  When she was thirteen years old her family moved to Drumbo where Doris took on part-time jobs as she worked towards her dream of becoming a nurse.  She graduated from the Brantford General Hospital School of Nursing, and became a Registered Nurse in 1949; however, Doris believed she had a bigger contribution to make in her field so she took courses at Western University in order to become a teacher of nurses. She began her career at St. Joseph’s Hospital Toronto, and in 1954 married the love of her life Carl.

In 1961 career opportunities required Doris and Carl to move to Sudbury, where they raised their children and where Doris continued practicing nursing, and later taught at Cambrian College School of Nursing.

After rewarding careers and significant contributions to their community, Doris and Carl retired and returned to their roots in southern Ontario, they took up residence in Woodstock. During the summer months, Doris enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Lake Nipissing with family and friends, and then heading to Florida for the winter months.  With Carl by her side, Doris spent many happy years of her

well-earned retirement.

Doris found comfort and strength in her faith, a faith that was reflected in the kindness, courage and compassion with which she lived her life.

She will be remembered for her dedication to her family, friends and career.  More importantly she will be remembered for her generosity, her thoughtfulness, her wonderful sense of humour, and beautiful smile.  Her warmth and kindness will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but we are all a little richer for having met and spent time with Doris.  Rest in Peace, dearest Dorie.

The Butcher family would like to thank everyone at Woodingford Lodge Woodstock for the loving and professional care they provided Doris during her stay there.  The support offered to both Doris and the family will not be forgotten.
