Beverley James "Bev" Wilks, a cherished family man, respected community member, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, at Woodingford Lodge in Woodstock, at the age of 97. Born on January 26, 1927, in East Zorra Township, Ontario, Bev was the beloved son of the late Harold and Stella (nee Irwin) Wilks.
Bev's life was one of dedication and love, beginning with his union to Shirley Yeoman in 1949 at Christ Church Huntingford. Their marriage of 75 years this past May, was a testament to enduring companionship and mutual respect, blossoming into a family that included their children Lynda (Bill) Rowell, Jim (Debbie) Wilks, Nancy (Pete) Mason, Tricia (Dave) McIntyre, and Susan (Larry) Gillespie. Bev was a doting grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
His early years were marked by service to his country, as he joined the army in April 1945 in London and trained in Chatham and Ipperwash. Although his military service was brief, being discharged on October 18, 1945, it was a period of his life that shaped his values of discipline and commitment. After the war, Bev embarked on a successful career at Western General Mutual Insurance Co., where he was known for his integrity and strong work ethic.
Bev was a man of many interests and passions. An avid baseball fan, he never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite team, the Detroit Tigers. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was a devoted member of Old St. Paul's Anglican Church, where he found strength and community. Bev's leadership qualities shone brightly during his tenure as president of the Woodstock Kinsman Club from 1969 to 1970, where he led with a sense of purpose and a desire to improve the lives of those around him.
Family was the heart of Bev's world. He loved nothing more than spending time with his loved ones, whether it was a quiet evening at home or a lively family gathering. His wisdom, humor, and kindness were the glue that held the family together, and his legacy of love will continue to live on through his descendants.
Bev leaves behind his siblings Victor Wilks and Lee (Helen) Wilks, as well as his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ted (Betty) Yeoman. He was predeceased by his brother Alec, and sisters Joyce and Helen, but his memory will be cherished by the many nieces and nephews who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid farewell to Beverley James Wilks, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by service, family, and faith. His was a journey of joy, challenges, and triumphs, and through it all, Bev remained a beacon of strength and love. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will forever be a guiding light for his family and friends.
The family would like to send a very heartfelt thank you to the staff at Woodingford Lodge, Woodstock, for their compassion and care during Bev’s stay with them.
