Barbara Jane Morrison

February 24, 1933 — August 5, 2023

The last surviving member of her immediate family, our mom passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Mom was born February 24, 1933 in Woodstock, Ontario. She was the youngest of 4 girls and 3 boys. Her father, John Asa Burton, born June 4, 1882, came to Woodstock from Greenspond, Newfoundland in 1916 and worked at the Eureka Foundry until his death on March 18, 1941. Her mother, Margaret Burry, born June 11, 1893 also came from Greenspond, Newfoundland in 1916 to live in Woodstock. Margaret was a housewife until her death on November 8, 1942. Having lost both of her parents by the age of 9, our mom was raised by her sister Mabel Kennedy of Detroit, Michigan and later by her brother George Burton of Woodstock.

Our mother’s first job was working at York Knitting Mills, then a waitress at the Queens Restaurant, followed by working at Hudsons Department Store and finally E.J. Pow Laboratories.

Our mom and dad (Earl) met while walking to work each morning at their respective jobs York Knitting Mills and Massey Harris. Mom and dad married February 25, 1950. Their first home together was a one bedroom apartment where the 7 Eleven Store is today. Their last home together was PeopleCare Tavistock.

She is survived by her loving children Lu-Anne Newell (Cary), James (Arlene), Terry (Brenda), and Robert (Sharon). She will be remembered by her grandchildren Jason, Darryl, Christine, William, Paul, Melissa, Bryan, Heather, Derek, Scott, Daniel, Chris and Sarah, 19 great- grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren and dear sisters-in-law Bertha Bigney (Nathan - 2003) and Marion Morrison (Elwood - 2021)as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years Charles “Earl” (2022), son David (2021) and his wife Carol (2019) of London, son Kenneth (2016) of St. Thomas and sisters Mabel Kennedy (1979) her husband Clarence (1975) of Detroit, Michigan, Florence Masters (1987) her husband Ross (1987) of Embro, Marguerite McIntyre (1991) her husband Glen (1979) of Woodstock, brothers Fred Collins (1990) of London, George Burton (1990) his wife Frances (2005) of Woodstock and Weston Burton (1990) of Toronto. Predeceased by her father-in-law Charles Morrison; mother-in-law Ella May Morrison; sisters-in-law Jean (Glen) Woodworth, Florence (Art) Harvey, Beatrice (Clinton Werner) (Frank) Potter; brothers-in-law Jack (Gerry) Morrison and James Morrison.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Cowing and the dedicated staff at PeopleCare in Tavistock for their care and compassion of our mother.

Memorial Visitation will take place on Monday August 21, 2023, from 12 noon- 1 pm followed by a Memorial Service at 1 pm held at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home (845 Devonshire Ave. 519-539-0004). Inurnment to follow at Oxford Memorial Park
